To me the standard should be whether he acted in a manner consistent with how a reasonable person would act in those circumstances.
"Those circumstances" would necessarily include fears and emotions and how one might reasonably interpret how quickly one must act to protect oneself and others.
It seems to me that the young man made a mistake, but one consistent with an untrained person regarding how to restrain an irrational person perceived to be an immediate threat in a crowded environment.
It sounds like those who were there were appreciative that he would act in such selfless fashion to protect themselves and others in a dangerous situation.
