because I retired from the Army after spending the 1st 7 years as an Infantry officer. In my time in the 82nd as a Platoon Leader and later in the 7th (Light) Infantry Division, we trained extensively in hand-to-hand combat as both units were expected to engage in close contact with the enemy. At Ranger School, we also trained in hand to hand combat.

My days were pre-MMA, but the training included Judo and Taekwondo techniques. Those who served after me were trained much more in the martial arts (as shown in the USMC manual I linked up)
