up in the championship (the division champion) probably gets some preference for an additional slot in the playoffs, simply because they have been designated a "champion".

Additionally, with divisions, you are stuck with a fairly set schedule.

Without divisions, you have a greater chance of having a possible favorable schedule in addition to having no "division champion" discrimination when competing for an at large playoff slot.

Not a strong argument - the expansion of the playoffs is much more important than whether or not divisions exist.
