Gates is clearly fine coach. First year coaches in the past often succeeded with players recruited by their predecessor. Frank Haith in 2011-12 is the best example.
Kobe Brown staying has certainly been a very big factor, but Gates success this year has been built on many other things as well, among them 1) bringing talented players from Cleveland State (Hodge, Gomillion, Majak) 2) recruiting quality D1 transfers (Gholson, Honor, Carter, Mosley) 3) exceptional JUCO recruitment (East, Diarra) Gates deserves extra credit for getting Shaw to recommit to MU. This success may be difficult to repeat year in and year out, but there is clearly a good eye for talent, an ability to recruit talent, and I think develop talent as well. The lack of rebounding and interior size/muscle and the sub par 3pt defense suggest this team may not go far in the tournament, but they could advance on 3pt shooting, turnovers and foul shooting prowess. The Tiger's future looks very bright.
