civilizations fall. Strong states and a weaker federal government is how it was wisely set up by our founders. But eventually people started turning more and more over to the government, and the government rewards and maintains that by "giving" the people more and more. It is the crack dealer giving the first few hits for free to get someone hooked. Once you get very far down that path, it is very hard to ever go back. People want their "hit" from the government.
