His key was having a staff he knew and trusted. Part of the problem we have had is taking good to very good assistants (not great like a Saban assistant) and tried to turn them into head coaches. So now they are trying to grow both as an assistant and figure out how to run a program where there are a lot of inherent Mizzou disadvantages (face it, we are not going to out recruit the top 4-6 in the SEC). As said here, Pinkel was not perfect through his tenure, but he had the background to run a program and he did.
