There have been schools fluctuate over 50 spots in a single year, due to a change in the ranking methodology.
There have been many instances of schools getting caught "cheating", with Oklahoma being a fairly recent example (of course, since they cheat at everything, unlike Mizzou).
That's why conferences care more about AAU status than the annual whims of a magazine.
A school can do things to improve/manipulate its rankings in magazines like USNWR, but AAU membership is largely beyond its control.
