supposed to come from entities that are NOT affiliated with the university. For example, private companies seeking an athlete to endorse their product.

In practice, however, so-called "NIL" (at the college level) is almost exclusively pay-for-play bribery funded by fans & boosters instead of real companies seeking legitimate promotional services.
