academic standards of student-athletes be the same as the student body.
If the average student body was top 10% of their class with a 27 ACT, then the football program or basketball program must maintain those same standards.
The Ohio States, the USCs, the Michigans, the Notre Dames, the Texas' of college athletics would not want to damage the academic reputations of their universities by lowering their standards across the board just to keep lower standards for student-athletes.
If they want to keep pay for play, it would limit the accumulation of top players with marginal academics. They may see some dump like West Virginia with no academic standards accumulating too much talent and develop better solutions to maintain their status.
