cannot land the really big fish. CM never stopped going after Moby Dick so he wasted time and resources that caused him to miss out on the next tier down.

If you think Pinkle and Anderson had no desire to land top rated talent you are fooling yourself. Both would have taken any top 20 kid every year if they thought they had the ability to land them. Neither were great recruiters they simply understood the landscape and their teams.

I don't want to see Gates trying to land an MPJ every season, it is not going to happen. But he should be able to regularly land top 25-75 players. If there is a top guy he has a shot at every few years then definition go for him. But be intelligent.
