Ideally, your HC is the best coach *and* recruiter in the game. Nick Saban and Coach K both fit that bill.
You mentioned Bennett and Wright (and I'll add Mark Few to the list), but they are X & O anomalies. Cuonzo certainly doesn't fit in that category. Overall, there are far more coaches who thrive more on *talent* rather than coaching. That's the category that Cuonzo falls into, until he proves otherwise.
The initial hype (in 2017) was based on the Porters and his *perceived* recruiting ability due to (1) the 5-stars he landed at UT & Cal, (2) his ability to recruit STL, and (3) the widely held empirical evidence-based assumption that black coaches have an inherent recruiting advantage with elite black players.
