You may be mistaking hate speech being coupled with assault of other unconstitutional behavior occurring at the same time. You could call some person the n-word at the mall. If you went up and threatened them, that would be assault, which is not protected.
And corporate America, as a private actor, is not subject to the allowable hate speech of the Constitution. So if you call a co-worker the n-word, even casually, and without further action of any kind, you could be fired, yes.
