Mizzou now has a Top 25 AD budget thanks to the new ABC/ESPN deal — ahead of schools like Clemson, Oregon, North Carolina, and UCLA...
The money is there now, and if our FB and BB programs start to rebound, we could easily get into the Top 20 if not Top 15 financially, at some point.
MU has long been considered a "sleeping giant", just waiting for the right coach to come along. Maybe Drink is that guy. Pinkel was close, but couldn't quite recruit at a high enough level to win the biggest games (e.g. 0-4 in conference title games).
Also, the fan base isn't "small" — we wouldn't have been invited to join a league like the SEC if that were the case. And if we ever start to win at a high level, the perception *will* change with top in-state recruits. In fact, that's already starting to happen with Drink at the helm.
Finally, all it takes is a couple "bad" seasons (9-3 or worse) to fail at a school like Auburn. There's no room for error, and virtually zero job security. I would rather coach at MU than Auburn for that reason alone. We're capable of winning a national title with the right coach... Pinkel came extremely close in 2007 and 2013.
