If his tenure had started out the way it ended (without major success), he would have been fired quickly... and then his reputation would have been severely damaged as a coach who couldn't win at a powerhouse program.
Taking those jobs is extremely risky. Malzahn was one of the lucky ones, but even in his case I think he would have been better off long-term at a program like Arkansas.
