If you beat out Duke and Kentucky for a top-rated player who ultimately turns out to be a "bust", that doesn't mean you recruited poorly.
Conversely, if you're forced to settle on a low-rated player because you missed on all of your top targets, you cannot claim you recruited well even if the player turns out to be a "diamond in the rough".
And of course, there's always team chemistry dynamics.
The bottom line is that recruiting and coaching are graded separately, and Mussleman has out-recruited stronger programs for his top targets, while Cuonzo has not.
