1978. I had been back at Mizzou and came back to work my final weekend at ONSR. We had a woodpile along a maintenance road for evening campfires and no one had been around for a couple of weeks so I was really cautious getting my firewood and was turning over each piece of wood with a stick. Just got comfortable there was no snake in the pile and tossed my stick in the bed of the truck. Reached down to grab the next slab of wood and there was a copperhead under it.
Since another ranger still had to get his wood for his campfire program, I thumped the snake and sent it to snake heaven. Laid it on the road for the other ranger to find. Asked him about it later and he never saw it--probably carried off by a hawk.
