I have had my my share of copperhead encounters. Killed 6-8 in the 15 years living here.
Came home one day and there is a 3' fat one dead right in front of the garage door. No sign of injury probably died of old age.
Another time, my wife tells me she saw one in the garage. She knows enough to know that it's copperhead. I look every time I'm out there and can't find it. About two weeks later she comes in and says she sees it. It is curled up in the corner right by the door into the house. She was carrying stuff in and had walk within 12" of it 3 times before she saw it.
Shovel 1, Snake 0.......
