Event was over and almost cleared out. I'm on horseback and headed to the trailer to call it a day. Car comes flying toward me and stops. "Do you know what a snakebite looks like?" Yeah. Pull the guys sock down and at the top of his foot are 2 fang punctures. They had been going back in the woods to smoke pot and must have stepped on the snake.
Radio for MedAct, keep him calm and extremity lower than the rest of his body, and apply a cool damp towel.
Off to SM Med he goes. Call later for follow-up for my report. Dry bite. Tetanus shot and he's been released.
Next one guy chases a ball into the rough at Tomahawk Golf Course and snake nails him on the back of the heel. He's going into shock big time and I radio for MedAct and ask to take a look. Pull his shoe off and right on the callous at the top of his heel is a single scratch like someone lifted a splinter. Other fang apparently hit the shoe and was deflected.
I tell him "there was no envenomation" What? "He didn't get the fang in to inject any venom."
His color comes back and he perks right up. Went out and finished the back 9.
