It was never put into this context by the "experts".

It was sold as even if we do everything right, we will still have 100k to 200k deaths.

Had Fauci and Brix explained it the way you did, and went even further by explaining their assumptions(which they never did) we could have maybe avoided some of the draconian measures taken that have likely plunged us into a major recession and possible depression.
