He mostly just makes excuses and blames others, and maybe I am interpreting his propensity to do that as malicious.

Regardless, my animosity comes from him not quitting after year 2. I don't see any way to spin that as anything other than a selfish move of putting oneself ahead of the good of a program that person should have cared about.
