The schools without options (Kansas, K-State, Iowa State) knew that MU had options, so they tried to appeal to our administration to form a pact that would benefit them but restrict us. KU's chancellor even wrote a note to Deaton begging for his loyalty to the Big12. We rightfully and understandably declined.
Make no mistake... the have-nots like KU, KSU, and ISU would have leaped at an opportunity to secure their futures in a Power 4 conference.
Their bitterness, jealousy, and resentment is understandable, but it's interesting that they don't have the same hard feelings toward Nebraska and Colorado.
