would have been UNC and UVA, but they weren't willing to leave the ACC.

I think Missouri, Virginia Tech, and NC State were all in the next tier, and of those 3 Missouri is the only one they could get.

So, if Mizzou hadn't accepted, then West Virginia was the next best candidate and — by most media reports — the next school to get an invite had MU declined.
