If memory serves it was the summer of 2012 and the PAC 12 made overtures to Texas; there was the Texas, OU, Tech and OState to the PAC 12. The Presidents/Chancellors of KU, KState, Iowa State and Mizzou agreed to a joint effort to keep the Big 12 intact. Then Boren at OU went public with maybe OU, OState, Texas and Tech should go to the PAC 12. When Deaton heard that, he became concerned that would happen and leave Mizzou in a weak conference with a less lucrative TV deal. Deaton considered less TVmobey for football unacceptable. Deaton then instructed Aldon to start looking at alternatives, which he did, going first to the BiG and then the SEC.
One could see Deaton’s actions as self preservation, putting Mizzou’s interests above the joint interests of the smaller Big XII or perhaps as the betrayal of KU, KState & Iowa State after agreeing to work with them to preserve the Big XIi. They certainly reduced Deaton’s and Mizzou’s standing with the folks at other BiG 12 schools.
There was a lengthy interview of Deaton in which he related the whole story that appeared on the Tiger AD web site around Thanksgiving 2012, again if memory serves.
