To answer your question, the science is ongoing. I participated in the maize genome project in 2005. That was the first time we sequenced the whole corn genome.
You can sequence 40 genomes a day on the machines that are in use today. The research is growing, but our understanding is slower. Managing the sheer amount of data that comes off today's sequencing instruments requires entire groups of people.
