recruiting if 19 of the 25 guys did not make it to campus.
Anyway... this is what I heard directly from Mike Kelly, at the wake of Marty Hendin of the St. Louis Cardinals. We were talking about the incredible season Mizzou had (07 I think), and he was just gushing over how much Pinkel meant to the University.
Mike was very loving of Larry Smith. You could tell he had compassion and personal love for Larry as a person. But he said, Larry was so discouraged by the first few years at Mizzou that the effort just wasn't there in the last few years that he put in the first few.
I will give Larry Smith 1 thing.
He proved you COULD have a winning season at Mizzou. He wasn't close to any kind of division title. We could barely make the Top 25. But at least we proved we COULD be at least a 7-8 win team and be competitive.
Unfortunately, when we went right back to the garbage can in 1999 and 2000, it was a seriously horrible and deflating feeling for the University.
Because it felt like we would never be able to even sustain being a 7 win team. That was our mountain top... and even then it couldn't continue year after year.
.......Until Pinkel shattered that into a million pieces and proved that you could even compete with the best programs in the nation at Mizzou.
All it takes is a great, great head CEO coach
