Top prospect Appel is a good example. He turned down going pro as a first round MLB pitcher to finish his engineering degree from Stanford. He still got drafted in the first round the next year and now that his baseball career has fizzled out he has the millions from baseball plus the engineering degree.
If he had been pursuing a phony degree many athletes pursue it would have made more sense to take the cash early - except his Dad is a big time lawyer for Exxon so he didn't need the MLB cash as much as a poor kid would.
There was a big football recruit a few years ago who originally intended to go to Missouri but changed his mind because of the Iowa State engineering school. Smart decision. Go pro in engineering and use football to pay for the education.
