If a person has decided to do evil and is taking innocent life, you are defending the sanctity of life by taking them out. It is the difference between murder (the taking of an innocent life) and killing (a police officer taking out someone randomly shooting into a crowd.)

One's religion is sacred. But if that religion says you should rape young girls it is no longer sacred. Why? Because it is serving evil and cannot be tolerated. There is a moral fabric to any functioning society that cannot be ignored.
