The minimum wage makes it illegal to hire someone at a mutually agreed to price negotiated in a free and open market if it is below the government mandated minimum.
So in many cases, the business just doesn't hire the person.
It causes unemployment.
That does not help the economy. Instead of the person working and receiving compensation for his work, he stays home and relies on the government taking money from others to give to him, as would be the case in your proposal.
