πιστεύω pisteúō, pist-yoo'-o; from G4102; to have faith (in, upon, or with respect to, a person or thing), i.e. credit; by implication, to entrust (especially one's spiritual well-being to Christ):—believe(-r), commit (to trust), put in trust with.
It is not a mere intellectual ascent to the truth, but an entrusting of one's soul to the Almighty.
Here is an imperfect, but illustrative example of the difference between the two.
If you walk into a room with two chairs, and look at the first and say, yes, that's a chair, you have intellectually agreed with the truth of it being a chair. However, because it is mere intellectual ascent to the truth of it, you get no benefit from it. But when you sit in the second chair, you are not only agreeing intellectually that it is a chair, you are relying upon it to be a chair, in the belief it will hold you up. This is the belief in the name of the Son of God of which Christ spoke in John 3:18. It is entrusting your soul to Almighty God, with the expectation that He will hold you up.
