Finding nothing would aid your "context" argument. "Hey, I knew there was nothing there and I just wanted to get on with the political agenda - I wasn't telling them not to do their jobs."

Based upon what we think we know of Trump's ego, it wouldn't surprise me if there's nothing criminal there, but just something that he finds personally embarrassing which he doesn't want to come to light. He just doesn't want to deal with it. Who knows though.
