mechanics are not the purview of the modern physicist. Outside of the first couple years of undergraduate physics mechanics and structures are an engineering topic not physics.
Current physicists study things like string theory, particle physics, cryogenics, plasma and astrophysics. Not much call to study a 400 year old dead topic.
