A reminder of proper strategy since it's still debated.

1. Call Gregg Marshall. "Hi Gregg, this is Jim. Not the micro-managing ass that called you last time. Things are different here. Do you have a number to come to MU?" If his number is under $5 mil, talk to him. If he says 'no' or has a bigger number, tell him thanks and hang up.
2. Call Archie Miller. See if he has a number. If it is less than $4 mil, talk to him. If not, move on.
3. See if there is another bigger name out that that might be looking to move and can be had in the $3 mil range. Perhaps a Jamie Dixon type situation. I would imagine any AD worth anything has a bit of a pulse on this or has people he can talk to about it.
4. Start calling the hot mid major guys like Keatts, Musselman, etc. Offer them $1-$1.5 mil with some nice incentives to win 20 games, win the league, make the NCAA, Make the Sweet 16, Final Four... Promise, make it a guaranteed contract escalator perhaps, that if they are hitting these incentives they become part of the base and get new incentives. It is ridiculous to offer these guys the $3-$5 mil that some of you think we should just give away to anyone who will take the job. But if one of these guys is earning it in 4 years, pay him $3 mil and keep upping it if he keeps killing it.
5. If all of this nets you nobody, call some of the average guys. Guys who are better than Frank and Kim, maybe even Mike, but not really good enough for what we want to be. Cuonzo for starters. A lot of you are in love with Cuonzo Martin and we could do a lot worse than him. Hiring him, or somebody like him, is not necessarily a failure, but should be a big warning that things are worse at MU than we even realize and we can't get anybody with a perceived higher ceiling.
These are the requirements you adhere to.
1. Nobody that has shown a chink in their armor. Nobody that had a hot stretch 5 years ago but hasn't been remotely consistent since. I consider Thad Matta to fall into this category.
2. No mid-majors that haven't won a conference title or been at least top 2 for 2-3 years running. Example: Shaka Smart
3. Prefer guys who appear to out-recruit their current program, but still show that they are coaching guys up.
4. Try to steer clear guys who have only been at their school for 1-2 years, unless they made a HUGE immediate impact and turnaround. Took a middler or worse to a conf title out of the blue. These guys can be risky, but are sometimes worth the risk. Better to take a risk on one of them than on a retread trying to regain lost glory. Keatts might be one of these guys, although he's now in year 3 which gives much more clarity.
5. Nobody that has already failed at a major program and not subsequently taken another major head coaching job and found success.
Example: Jeff Capel
Some of you talk like we have to offer $3+ mil regardless. The list of guys that warrant starting at around $3mil and will come to MU is short.
