Especially considering the current state of the program and who you've hired and fired recently. He has name recognition and an overall good reputation. He knows football. He can be coached regarding his major college media savvy, which is very different than the NFL.
I'm not impressed with who he's assembled on his staff, but I could be wrong and they could do a bang-up job. It would have been great if his guys had more major-college high-level positions in their resume instead of the NFL, but that can be a double-edged sword. They may or may not adapt well to the college game (I don't know yet), but their approach to kids with an NFL resume may sell well in getting good recruits right off the bat, which you guys desperately needed.
So no, not odd at all. I would absolutely say the same things if Mizzou had hired him, and considering the state of our program, been a bit less pumped about it that we got an NFL guy.
