can certainly set up a bilateral meeting with Putin if they like. It does sound like Putin will not sit down with Zelensky, however.
The US can't set the terms of any truce, though they could act as a mediator or middle man, or whatever, to help parties that are at loggerheads understand each other & hopefully come to some agreement.
All the US can do is discuss/negotiate its own role in this conflict going forward. Continuing to pour billions of dollars into Ukraine in what is clearly a losing cause would be absolutely absurd. Not as absurd as sending US troops in to engage directly in a war with Russia, but still quite absurd in its own right.
It might prolong the war, resulting in untold additional tens of thousands of deaths of Ukrainians & Russians & mercenaries, and in untold additional suffering, and untold billions in destroyed infrastructure in Ukraine... but would the delay of the inevitable defeat of Ukraine by several months be worth that horrendous cost?
If you were president, or king, and could control US policy, what would you do in this situation?
