the only sure way they can keep most of Ukraine. If they force Russia to take all of Ukraine to end the war, they may well just decide that they have to keep it to keep Ukraine from continuing on in this or other wars.

It would be akin to the idiot kid who gets definitively beaten, but refuses to give up until he gets pummeled so badly that he can't possibly get back up.... maybe ever.
