members have spent hundreds of billions $ in military training, logistics, weapons etc. in helping Ukraine, but they're still getting their bvtts kicked. The US is $36 trillion in debt & will be adding another $2 trillion this year... if there's no recession. Europe is also in bad economic shape. The bottom line is neither the US, nor NATO can keep up this level of spending in support of Ukraine, but even if they could, Ukraine would still be crushed!
Trump undoubtedly told him that Ukraine's defeat is inevitable, and it would be foolish for the US to continue throwing good money after bad, and therefore were not going to continue doing so. He urged Zelenski to sit down with Russia and get the best deal that they could.
The other option would be to ask the other NATO nations and other Ukraine allies to pick up the slack, but that would be an even greater impossibility.
NATO too sees the handwriting on the wall & surely urged Zelenski to sit down & negotiate as well.
Zelenski undoubtedly has a beef, but if those who pushed Ukraine into picking this fight for their own personal goals finally were honest with them and told him, Sorry, but you F'ed up... you trusted us, he really has no choice but to do what is best for Ukraine given the very unpleasant reality.
fwiw, Russia doesn't need or really want the rest of Ukraine. They just want to protect Crimea, the ethnic Russian populace in eastern Ukraine that wants to join Russia, and their access to the sea. They're happy to let Ukraine keep central & western Ukraine & the Nazis in the far western part of Ukraine, and remain an independent state, as long as the treaty setting the new borders also disallows Ukraine from joining NATO & prevents them from putting missiles & other weapons that could threaten Russia within their borders.
