Rene Descartes called a person the union of a soul, the thinker of one’s thoughts, and the body. When consciousness is not possible, the thinker of one’s thoughts is not in union with the body, it is a body, but not a person. Of course this definition he limited to personhood of human beings, and he was not speaking of God’s personhood.
