That would be most obvious in the case of someone who died. At that point he or she would be a dead person, but continuing life support would be futile.
If keeping a living person alive because of life support, but if they are on the verge of death and they have no chance of recovery and doing so would be a huge burden on the family, then it could be permissible to stop or to never start extraordinary measures to keep them alive.
It would never be permissible to intentionally kill someone, however. It would also not be permissible to stop feeding them or to stop providing them with water/hydration. Those are not extraordinary measures.
