China had a weaker hand, both relative to our current situation. The Biden admin seemed to be doing all they could to destroy the US economy, and China saw their vulnerability and have been working to diversify and reduce their dependence upon the US.

They have also been working to secure access to rare earth metals, oil supplies, nuclear plants, solar & wind production. But they have apparently been going into pretty deep debt and the communist top down control of the economy is a fatally flawed system.

It may well be that Trump picked the best time for this showdown... before we were indeed the underdog.

Time will tell.
