I get it, we're still butthurt from the legendary debacle that was the Kim Anderson years, but McCollum is different. He's widely known in coaching circles as someone who is both an outstanding analytical mind AND a coach that players respect, can relate to and are willing to run through a brick wall for. 80% of coaching is getting your guys to buy into the game plan. By all accounts, he's one of the best at that. He's going to be a great division 1 coach.
That said, I'm not trying to get Missouri to hire McCollum right now, either.
Dennis Gates hasn't done enough to lose this job yet. Two tournaments in three years and a historic turnaround this year. He has to do more going forward, but he's done enough to earn the opportunity to continue moving forward. Just getting to the tournament isn't enough. Gates needs to do some damage in his next trip, and if he doesn't, it might be time to talk about making a change.
