I know I post alot of negatives and my apologies but I AM a Mizzou Fan and always cheer and want them to do well.
I do think that Gates now has a large enough body of work to judge his overall ability as a coach.
That being said, my observations ( and I am NOT an expert NOR a former coach) are that Gates:
1 - Definitely a Great Recruiter
2. Appears to have a logical scheme to his recruiting in getting athletes that 'fit' the sytle he desires. This varies greatly from Snyder who also was a good recruiter but never seemed to be able to get all the recruited parts to 'fit' into his schemes.
3. THe most glaring I see is that Gates teams are NEVER playing their best ball near the end of the season. In addition, in many pivotal games, when matched with a veteran coach, he gets out coached which leads me to beleive he is NOT a good tactician. Porter Mosher is a good tactician. Calipari an excellent tactician. The coach at Vanderbilt is a proven excellent tactician.
All this being said, I still do not think Gates is worth 4 Million + per year but it is what it is...And while he has done well this year in terms of last season (ha)...I do not think he has earned any sort of contract extension/pay increase.
Yes, the SEC is brutal. Good athletes definitely make a difference. Yet, the tactician ability of the Coach is huge in many games.
My two cents. I still root for Mizzou.
