Russia is a formidable foe for smaller countries and they're consolidating power & resources by advancing on neighboring grounds. Sure, NATO is an external threat, but has NATO indicated any willingness to invade Russia?
Those that would prolong the fight could believe that you are causing Russia to expend resources, to the point that, it makes no sense to expend resources to get additional resources. They're already "borrowing" soldiers from North Korea and have suffered a much bigger cost than they expected to. If you truly believe them to be a threat, then checking them in place and delaying their progress makes sense. It comes at a tremendous cost though.
