The argument by the author of the linked article was that there was no insurrection, just a protest that became a riot. While most of the charges against the rioters were related to disorderly conduct, entering restricted areas and assault, it's notable that several of the participants in that "riot" were convicted of seditious conspiracy per a law created after John Brown's assault on Harpers Ferry in 1859.
Given those convictions and the wording of the law (below), it's not hard to argue that at least a conspiracy to overthrow the US government has happened.
"If two or more persons in any State or Territory, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, conspire to overthrow, put down, or to destroy by force the Government of the United States, or to levy war against them, or to oppose by force the authority thereof, or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States, or by force to seize, take, or possess any property of the United States contrary to the authority thereof, they shall each be fined or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both."
