... so I don't know if they'd be willing to switch from calling themselves "Conference" to "League". But if they did, that would allow the divisions to be called "conferences" instead, and if we use old traditional conference names, then we've got a semblance of balance regionally again, with the ability to keep historical records and traditions tied to these conferences.
But even if they don't take that idea... they can still do something like:
The SEC Conference
1. The Atlantic Coastal Division
2. The Big 12 Division
3. The Southeastern Division
Still works.
And to keep the Top 25 and BCS committees or rankings interesting, they could do 1 at-large bid from each of the two super leagues. 3 division winners + 1 wild card = 4 teams in each conference, for an 8-team playoff.
It also forces Notre Dame to join or get left out. They'd Choose the Big 10 - ACC - Pac 10... which has most of their natural historic rivals.
