If it keeps going the way its going, it appears inevitable that the Big 10 and SEC will be the AFC and NFC and 32 teams (approx.) in each Conference. ~ 64 total.
And if every P5 team is in one of the two premiere conferences, dividing up the television revenue fairly equally, then there is no more mass inequality among the P5s. (which is the cause of conference realignment)
This is why we don't have that same problem in the NFL with teams looking to move divisions or conferences. Doesn't happen. Why does it work for the NFL? Regional rivalries, and centralized television control throughout the 32 teams.
Along the same lines... if the Big 10 and SEC do a television "merger" - they effectively have total governing control of all the original Power Conference Universities from a Divisional and scheduling perspective.
They could create a governing body, which treats them like two Leagues (i.e. the AFL and NFL merger into the AFC and NFC).
And they divide up the 2-league 64 teams into 6 "Conferences" based on regional balance, rivalries and history.
Instead of 2 Conferences and 6 divisions or pods... we simply call them 2 Leagues and 6 Conferences.
The SEC governing body rebranded as "The Sugar Bowl"
--------------------------------------------
1. The SEC
2. The BIG 12
3. The ACC
The Big 10 rebranded as - "The Rose Bowl"
-----------------------------------------------
4. The BIG Ten
5. The BIG East
6. The PAC-10
The Sugar Bowl Winner meets the Rose Bowl Winner for the Championship.
Remember... if the Big 10 and SEC have all the P5 schools and get a combined television rights deal like a Pro League does... we can absolutely go back to traditional regional conferences and rivalries. There is no definitive advantage or disadvantage financially and since all the schools are in the Big 10 and SEC, they would have already reached some matter of equality in "conference" prestige.
As for where Mizzou would end up on there... I'll leave that to your imagination. The idea isn't to rewind the clock to the year 1996 subjectively.
Perhaps Mizzou would still be in the SEC, or maybe the Big 10 or maybe the Big 12.
Maybe Colorado is in the Pac and maybe Arkansas goes to the Big 12 to be with Texas and A&M and their former SWC brethren.
Maybe Nebraska stays in the Big 10 and Notre Dame joins
Where the teams fit isn't the concern. It's how can the powers that be (and that appears to be The SEC, Big 10 and TV networks) get what they want --- a monopoly --- while also fixing the super conference thing into something that makes sense traditionally.
Believe it or not... The 2 Super Conference thing could end up saving CFB
