Colorado left the old Big XII in order to "escape" its academic shortcomings. I.e. when Texas sought unsuccessfully to get the PAC 12 to expand by adding Texas, Tech, OU and OState in 2011, CU's President publicly stated to the press after the rejection something to the effect of "why would CU want to add the Big XII schools are going through so much effort to be rid of them (for academic reasons). The current Big XII is not as strong academically as the 2012 version.
While the PAC XII has lost some of its academic luster with the movement of USC and UCLA to the BigOneConference, it still has Stanford, Cal Berkley and Washington. Additionally, Arizona State has a rapidly emerging repustation as one of the most innovative schools in the nation. It also has 72,000 full time students in Tempe which is part one of the five largest metropolitan areas i the nation. (And ASU has been the receipent of substantial gifts from the Walton family.)
While its difficult to see a replacement for either USC or UCLA in the LA metro area, there are some very attractive potential PAC expansion candidastes in the current PAC area, i.e. Las Vegas. The PAC does not have the aversion to the gambling center that some schools/conferences appear to have.
And finally, I understand that Colorado attracts more out of state students from California than from any other state.
Sorry to the board members from other Big XII schools, but just don't see Colorado returning to today's Big XII.
