but rather the history of having them for a long time. The south didn't obtain their franchises until the sunbelt boom which started in the 60's. The only pro team in all the south prior to that in just about any sport was the Dallas Cowboys. As a result, college sports were given far more importance than they were in places like Missouri and Illinois and Ohio and Pennsylvania et al.... You seem to think that's a bad thing while I think it's great for Missouri to have established itself early in pro sports.
The difference between Missouri and Ohio St and Michigan is that Missouri enrollment was only 22,000 not all that long ago while Ohio St and Michigan had enrollments of over 50,000 for as long as I remember. They have much larger alumni bases.
