NATO membership increases our determent (sp?)

If the U.S. is not a member of NATO and Russia wins in Ukraine, it will only emboldent Putin, et al, to make further moves, i.e. grabbing Finnland, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, etc. and very possiblly threatening Western Europe, i.e. Germany, France, Italy, etc.
If that were to happen, that is Russia, supported by China, comes west, what would the U.S.A. do, what should it do? One possibility is accept a world dominated by Russia and China or what?
If Russia prevails in Ukraine and comes further west and China moves aggressively in the Far East, where does that leave the U.S.?
Putin is on record as saying that his goal is to recover all of the territory that Imperial Russia held and controlled under Peter the Great.
It is better to deter Russia and China from ever making such moves than it is to let them start the process of expanding and then have to try to stop it.
