In the roughly seventy years since the end of WWII there has not been a single major war in Western Europe. In the roughly seveny years prior to NATO there were three, two of which involved the U.S. and cost this country both treasure and lives.
Yes, there are costs to being part of NATO, but they are insignificant to the potential costs and downside of a major war breaking out in Europe.
