tens of thousands of dollars to keep the plantation going and treated their slaves as well as any other slave owner possibly culpable for a social practice that was legal and functioning as one of the main economic engines of early United States of America - how could such people be guilty of crimes against humanity?
It's all about awareness.
What is totally acceptable in one age is contemplated as an unimaginable horror in a later one.
But the truth is, any decent human being knows inherently when exploitation is happening in any age and they either go along with the crowd and behave as if it's not happening or they realize what's going on and work to make a change.
Initially football didn't even want black players.
Then when it turned out black players were usually better, they wanted mostly black players.
As the college game became more popular, the amount of money going to the top football program plantations really started to explode.
At which point we crossed the dotted line and the exploitation became glaringly obvious.
Coaches hitting the hoods to get players for as many live reps in games as possible, and regardless of the results of those reps, the vast majority of those players ending up either unable to complete their degree, secure a 'real degree' or get much advantage from the experience.
And that doesn't even bring in the worker's compensation aspect of this. Football is a VERY DANGEROUS sport where light injury occurs on almost every play and serious injuries occur almost every game.
If there was an 'evil rich' robber baron running a coal mine with miners coming out every day with the exact same injuries football players accept as 'normal', you would probably be horrified and rail against that owner and that industry as barbaric and in need of extreme regulation.
Further, the mining companies would eventually either be forced to implement all sorts of safety procedures or they'd be shut down or both.
Instead, because it's essentially gladiator-style blood- sport, all of these injuries are accepted by one and all as a matter of course.
NIL is the first correction of the entertainer/spectator imbalance. Now SOME money will flow to the entertainers who will no longer be treated like lions, tigers and bears that must be fully depreciated and then put down when their useful life is complete.
Good. One step forward.
Medical is next. Football may or may not survive the medical challenges but if it does how much NIL money will need to be funneled to long-term medical care for all the injuries? It will be material.
The reality that most big-time football programs are run and supported by mostly white fans, while the players remain mostly black, is just one of life's ironies. Or perhaps many of these fans still have karma to run off and helping to elevate young men from humble beginnings (even when done in appreciation for blood-sport) is a clever way to get that done.
Bottom-line is exploitation is being corrected - those that fight it or worse: claim none ever existed are simply in deep denial - no different than the slave owners in the deep south back in the day...
